Since independence in 1962, Algeria has had two constitutions. The first of these, approved in 1963, established Algeria as a republic, committed to socialism. In 1976, the National Charter and a new constitution were drafted, debated, and eventually passed by national referenda. Many changes of this text were made in the following years.

Bouteflika opens up about constitutional amendments

In public remarks in Algiers this week, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika proposed limited constitutional amendments that some say would permit him to run for a third term in office. Algeria's political parties had mixed reactions to the news.
