May 17, 2007

Egypt State Information Service - At his meeting yesterday 16/5/2007 with the National Democratic Party (NDP) election committee which will supervise the Shura Council elections, President Mubarak endorsed the NDP nominations for the mid-term elections of the Shura Council scheduled to be held on June 11.

This came in a statement by Safwat al-Sherif, the speaker of the Shura Council and the NDP Secretary General following the meeting.

Sherif said the NDP higher election committee will consist of the NDP Secretary General, the members of the NDP bureau, and the secretary of ethics and parliamentary affairs.

Sherif said some 811 NDP candidates will compete on 88 seats in 67 constituencies.

He said some limited constituencies will be open for competition between more than one NDP candidate adding this applies to governorates with tribal nature or others with a special nature in their political and social structures.

Sherif said the President stressed that candidates who will run in the Shura Council elections must be accepted by citizens in view of services they provide and their capabilities to express their interests.

Al-Tagammu, Misr Arab Socialist, Al-Wefaq Al-Watani, the Republican, and Misr youth parties have decided to compete in the Shura Council elections whereas al-Wafd and Nasserite parties decided not to take part.

Sherif said the NDP candidates will submit their credentials as of today.

He said the symbol crescent will be assigned for white collars whereas the symbol of camel will be assigned for laborers.
