Apr 20, 2007
Magharebia.com - Some 12,229 candidates representing 24 political parties and independents will run in the upcoming legislative elections, scheduled for May 17th, APS quoted the interior ministry as saying on Thursday (April 19th).
The statement said 986 of the candidates will run as independents. The presidential alliance's parties, which include the National Liberation Front (FLN), the National Democratic Rally (RND) and the Movement of the Society for Peace (MSP), will be represented by 541 candidates. The Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD) will field 539 candidates, and the National Republican Alliance (ANR) 525 candidates. Islamist parties, one of which won the 1991 elections, will not be allowed to run. The Algerian parliament is bicameral, consisting of a lower chamber, the National People's Assembly (APN), with 380 members, and an upper chamber with 144 members. The previous general elections in June 2002 were won by the FLN but were marred by violence and low turnout.
