Algeria: Constitution Amendment
Jun 17, 2006
Arab Reform Initiative - The National Liberation Front (FLN) proposes an amendment to the 1996 constitution aimed at installing a presidential system.
The amendment would cancel the limitation on the re-election of the president, currently set at two renewals, and would prevent the parliament from dismissing the government. A national referendum is scheduled for next fall to gain “popular approval” of the amendment.
